Designing Low-Energy Buildings with ENERGY-10 Software v.1.8 Overview
New Version 1.8
New Features:
- Photovoltaic module that provides the ability to model and simulate the performance of a PV system that is either stand-alone or integrated with the building.
-
Solar Domestic Hot Water module provides a new solar domestic/service hot water modeling capability.
-
A new library ("ASHRAELIB") is included with Version 1.8 defining constructions (wall, roof, window, etc.) as spelled out in ASHRAE 90.1-2004.
ENERGY-10 software is a powerful design tool that analyzes -- and illustrates – the energy and cost savings that can be achieved through more than a dozen sustainable design strategies. Hourly energy simulations help you quantify, assess, and clearly depict the benefits of daylighting, passive solar heating, natural ventilation, well-insulated envelopes, better windows, lighting systems, mechanical equipment, and more.
ENERGY-10 System Requirements
Although ENERGY-10 will run on an IBM compatible PC 486DX2 with 16MB RAM and Windows 95, this equipment is sub-optimal and the program will run very slowly.
ENERGY-10 simulations are very numeric intensive and you will be far more satisfied running later versions of Windows (for example, Windows 98, 2000, or XP) with the recommended hardware parameters suggested by Microsoft.
Typically, this would be a system with a 350 MHz Pentium III CPU or greater,
and 64MB of RAM or greater. Energy-10 itself requires 13+ MB of hard disk
space.
Designing Low-Energy Buildings with ENERGY-10 Software v.1.8 Features
Key ENERGY-10 Features
Streamline the energy analysis process with these innovative features:
AutoBuild
A pre-design wizard. Use AutoBuild to create a Reference Case Building. Given only five inputs – location, building use category, size, HVAC, and utility rates – ENERGY-10 can define and evaluate a Reference Case Building during the pre-design phase. Its clear, concise graphic output lets you systematically assess where major savings can be achieved in heating, cooling, and lighting energy.
Apply
Use the Apply feature to select from a menu of energy-efficient strategies (EESs) that enable you to create your own Low-Energy Case Building. The Reference Case is then used as the basis for comparison.
Rank
ENERGY-10's powerful Rank feature sequentially prioritizes and applies your energy-efficiency strategies, evaluates the outcome, and indicates the optimum choices for your building. ENERGY-10 allows you to make recommendations or selections based on optimum returns on first-cost investment.
Defaults
ENERGY-10 is loaded with default values based on national averages of various building types. These values allow the user to quickly analyze the building in the pre-design phase, even with limited information on what the building will eventually become. These values are fully editable as you proceed through design development, so that you can more accurately represent local and project-specific building conditions.
Designing Low-Energy Buildings with ENERGY-10 Software v.1.8
Details
Why use it?
Your clients appreciate and expect high-performance buildings, and Designing Low-Energy Buildings with ENERGY-10 helps you deliver well beyond expectation. Using climate data that's site-specific, you'll see how different combinations of materials, systems, and siting will yield lesser or greater results, based on energy use, comparative costs, and reduced emissions.
This powerful tool helps you make informed decisions about energy performance during the crucial early phases of design, when sustain-able building strategies and materials can be integrated at lowest cost. The ENERGY-10 software helps take the guesswork out of integrated, whole building design.
ENERGY-10 Software
ENERGY-10 software calculates 'whole building performance' and is best suited to buildings with one or two zones. The interface is simple, the analysis thorough, and the results accurate and quick. Simulate retail and office buildings, warehouses, schools, restaurants, residences, lodging facilities, and more.
Launch ENERGY-10 and within minutes, a detailed project simulation unfolds. Perform hour-by-hour calculations and produce graphic reports depicting your building's thermal, HVAC, and day-lighting performance over a full year of operation. Use actual energy and demand charges to track operating costs; evaluate hourly, monthly, or annual energy use; and track peak loads for your clients' projects.
Your Assurance of Quality and Innovation
Designing Low-Energy Buildings with ENERGY-10 was developed by SBIC, the National
Renewable Energy Laboratory, the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and
the Berkeley Solar Group with support from the U.S. Department of Energy's
Office of Building Technology, State and Community Programs.
The ENERGY-10 software is updated on a regular basis; registered users will
receive upgrades either via free website downloads or at a nominal charge when
issued in CD format.
Here's what the pros are saying about Designing Low-Energy Buildings with
ENERGY-10
" It's been my contention that as resources like ENERGY-10 become available,
our professionals will finally embrace energy efficiency as a design principle.
It will become the norm for buildings to far surpass local energy codes."
–
Susan Maxman, FAIA, Susan Maxman Architects
" This is the best conceived energy analysis software I have seen...
ENERGY-10 will help both of my businesses and thousands like mine deliver higher
grade con-sulting services to clients."
Marc Rosenbaum, PE, Energysmiths & ARC Design Group
" Normally, I don't get excited about energy simulation models, but we
at RMI are excited about this one, because we think it can fundamentally change
general design practice. [Energy-10] has a really intuitive interface that's
extremely easy and fast to use."
–
Amory Lovins, Rocky Mountain Institute
" I can't imagine doing another project without using ENERGY-10 . It's
so user friendly that one can get useful information right away. It also has
great depth, enabling those with technical prowess to reach new heights in
energy efficient design."
–
A. George Beeler, AIM Associates
"The handbook is particularly beneficial because it's user friendly and
provides a comprehensive analysis of options, often unavailable on small and
medium size projects where time and budgetary constraints can limit complex
modeling."
–
Paul Bush, PPG
